10 Writing Prompts for Your First Blog Post

So, you started a blog and now you have no idea what to write about. You're staring at the screen, fingers perched above your keyboard and inspiration is nowhere to be found.

Don't worry, we've got your back!

In this post, we've provided you with a list of 10 different prompts to get your creative juices flowing for your very first blog post. We'll answer the question, “What should I write about?” and hopefully inspire you to write many more blog posts.

1. Introduce Yourself

Tell the world a little about who you are. We like to think of this like an “elevator pitch”, you've only got a few seconds to get someone interested in your blog and knowing who you are goes a long way to them investing in your story, your journey, your experience.

As with all of our prompts, only share what you're comfortable with but some ideas include:

  • How old are you?

  • Where are you from?

  • What are you passionate about?

2. Introduce Your Online Presence

Part of understanding who you are is knowing where you are - and we don't just mean this as in your physical location or in some philosophical way. This is more about someone found your blog and now they want to find you elsewhere, so where can they find you to learn more about you.

  • Is there a social network you post on frequently? BlueSky, Instagram, etc.

  • Do you post videos on YouTube or livestream somewhere?

  • Do you have more writing that you want people to see?

3. Introduce Your Hobbies

Much like the “What are you passionate about?” question above, telling folks about your hobbies is a great way to find community with others who also share your interests.

  • Write about the games you're playing, the movies you're watching, the books you're reading

  • Write about the crafts you're doing, the food you're eating or the places you love to go to

  • Write about the instruments you can play, the stories you've written, the routines that make up your day

4. Introduce Your Favorites

Talking about your favorite things is always an easy to way get blog post ideas. Whether you make a list of favorites or write singular posts detailing your favorite things, it's a rich area of inspiration.

  • Create a list of all your favorite things

  • Detail one specific thing that you really love

  • Tell us about your favorite foods, your favorite experiences or your favorite forms of entertainment

5. Introduce Your Social Circle/Pets

Are you gonna be blogging about the friends in your life, your family or your pets? Share some get-to-know them information to introduce us to them.

  • Do you live with other people who might show up in your posts?

  • What's your pets name? How long have you had them? What's the best thing about them?

  • Who are the friends you might mention on your blog?

6. Detail What Your Blogging About

One of the biggest things to include in your first blog post is what you're hoping to blog about. Letting people know what they might find within your posts sets expectations and fosters anticipation. Why should someone read your blog and why should they come back?

  • What do you plan on writing about?

  • What will your first few posts be about?

  • When might people see your next post? Will you post on a schedule?

7. Share Your Favorite Links

Another step to finding a community of like-minded readers, sharing some of your favorite links gives readers a look at some of the places you frequent around the web and is closely associated to the prompt above about sharing your online presence and your favorites?

  • What are the sites that you first check into?

  • What links have you been clicking on for years and years?

  • Do you have sites that you visit everyday, multiple times a day?

8. Share a Song You Can't Stop Playing

Music connects us on an incredibly deep level and is another great way to find your community. Whether it's pop, rock, punk or country, sharing the music that shapes your life and what it means to you can connect you with more readers.

  • Do you have a playlist that you want to share? That you listen to in certain circumstances?

  • Do you have a song that is connected to a memory or a routine or a specific emotion?

  • Who are the musical artists that inspire you and why? What about their music speaks to you?

9. Write About Your Blogging Goals

Much like the prompt above, talking about your blogging goals and journey helps to keep you accountable to your audience and also let's them know what you're hoping to achieve with them as your community of readers.

  • Write about the stats you hope to see - number of views, number of subscribers, number of posts

  • Write about how you hope to feel during your blogging journey and what blogging does for your emotions

  • Write about the milestones you want to reach and celebrate your blogging wins

10. Suggest Other Blogs You Like

Hopefully, as a blogger, you're reading other people's blogs. Maybe you've stumbled upon a post you love or maybe you've been reading someone's blog for many years. Share your favorite blogs, posts and writers.

  • Make a list of bloggers you love and why

  • Make a weekly list of blog posts you've read during the week

  • Write a love letter to your favorite blog and highlight your favorite posts
