The Hunter

Chapter II. Obtentus (part 3)

Still standing by the window, the hunter looks at the priestess with slight frown: "All due respect, your grace, but as a hunter, I don't take orders from the priesthood." "This time you do, Yrius", — she frowns back, an envelope in her hand that she fished out of pile of papers on her desk. — "This is a letter of approval from the Head Huntsman. We both agree that your enthusiasm will be better used elsewhere."
She continues, handing him the envelope: "I heard you take a lot of interest in Riman province. Something about their statistics." The hunter, immediately interested, responds: "Oh yes. Riman's shadow attack numbers are too high for their dark seed detection rates, which could mean two things—"
He opens the envelope and glances at the document inside: "Either their prevention protocols need improvement, or they have older shadows they haven't dealt with. The former is a problem for the priesthood, the latter—for hunters." The priestess intelaces her fingers, the gem on her ring glows slightly. With a thoughtful look in her green eyes she replies: "And this is why you're going to Riman. Assess the real situation there and investigate the root cause behind it. I take it you already have some theories on where to start?"
The hunter starts pacing again, right hand holding the papers, left one on the hip where his two belts cross: one holds the holster for his revolver, the other a row of bullet cartriges. He says, thinking out loud: "Maybe. Riman used to have a strong Moon Sisters' presence—" "Like any other province", — interjects the priestess. "Yes, but not anymore."
