Thoughts about canons

Thinking about reading someone talking about how Secunit from the Murderbot Diaries fears being acid bathed and like. Something in my brain was screaming that the Sec Units don’t get acid bathed because they cost so much to produce. But that’s a thing established in the TV series.

Which leads to my thoughts about fights breaking out in the fandom over what is canon and how some would think the book canon takes precedence over the TV show canon because.. well it came first.

Honestly, I really didn’t like all the changes they made to the story and canon in the TV show. The acid bath part was one of them. The addition of Labubu or whatever her name was, was another one.
But then who’s right in canon? Let’s get more general with other fandoms where there’s books, tv, movies, etc.
One could say these are two different AU and they will never cross. Which I honestly can go for. The TV show can just.. go away for all I care. But some people want to cross the streams and will put forth TV show canon as applying to book canon and that gets messy.
People into comic books tend to have this slightly figured out as the comic books establish that there’s billions of universes and hell, they’ll even have them cross. Your Batman kills people? Fine. Mine is the goofy Adam West style. We can have our two Batmans.
But the TV show of Murderbot establishes a look for Secunit. He’s white and male. Which in the books they’re brown, and gender Not Applicable. (Someone might argue Secunit has no gender in the TV show but Labibi is very much saying he’s a dude.) So of course a lot of the fan art is of the TV show version, which is dissonant to the book version.
My brain screams out in protest of the TV show fanart. X3 Now the art pool is polluted with this white cis het looking dude. But the TV show peeps are allowed to have their fun.

Of course being fandom, people are gonna argue over things and people are gonna yell at other people that they are “doing it wrong”. “No no. Secunit is brown and not a dude. I don’t care what the TV show says! Read the books!” and all that screaming.

I just really wish that medias would take into account what’s established in canon, instead of making new canon and “splitting the party” and starting fights. Or maybe I just want more stuff to remain consistent so I can get my N/A gendered Secunit and not Whitey McWhiteface.
